Metal cutting methods

Metals can be cut in a variety of ways. Cutting is the act of separating a material into smaller pieces by splitting it along an intended cutting line without altering the physical state of the material itself. The selection of the cutting method for a given material depends on several factors such as:

• material thickness
• type of material
• cutting speed
• precision
• accuracy
• repeatability
• cost of the cutting service.

In the metal industry we distinguish between the following cutting methods:

• plastic cutting
• thermal cutting
• machining
• arc cutting
• plasma cutting
• water jet cutting.

One of the most popular cutting methods in most plants of the metal industry is laser cutting, that is the thermal cutting method. In this method, the main energy source is the energy coming from the laser beam. Laser cutting is used to separate materials such as plastics, wood, steel and ceramics. Laser cutting is also used for drilling and punching holes.

• structural steel and aluminium up to 25 mm
• acid-resistant and stainless steel up to 20 mm
• copper, brass, molybdenum, etc. up to 10 mm.
