The speed of cutting with the fiber laser

The speed of cutting with the fiber laser

The speed of cutting with the laser has a great influence on the efficiency of the process. In theory, it is known that the more powerful the laser, the better the performance and quality of cutting, but this varies in practice. The laser optical systems, which are responsible for transmitting the beam of the fiber laser, are a major problem. This is because the higher the laser power, the greater the risk of damage to the optics. This in turn translates into faster wear and tear of lenses. They have to be replaced, thus increasing the cost of manufacturing.

The second important factor influencing the cutting speed in fiber technology is the geometry of the laser beam, which depends on, among other things, the diameter of the beam focal point, the focal length of the lens and collimator and the power density of the laser beam. The diameter of the beam varies from about 20 to as much as 300 um. (The smaller the diameter of the laser beam, the higher the power density). When cutting with a laser light beam, the aim is to make the cutting gap as narrow as possible. However, if the gap is too narrow, there is not enough room to effectively blow out the molten metal. Therefore, the recommended diameters largely depend on the thickness of the material in question.

Our laser cutting machine from Trumpf with a Fiber source and TruDisk laser power of 6 kW features a disk laser that produces wavelengths of 1.03 µm, that is 10 times less than CO2 lasers, which results in better energy absorption by the material and contributes to faster cutting of steel while maintaining the quality and dimensions of workpieces in the thickness range of 0.2 to 25 mm even at the speed of 50000 mm/min, and the result is a lower price for laser cutting services.
